{"id":773,"date":"2018-09-27T16:45:51","date_gmt":"2018-09-27T16:45:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trustedagedcare.com.au\/?p=773"},"modified":"2018-09-27T16:45:51","modified_gmt":"2018-09-27T16:45:51","slug":"a-chat-with-the-family","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trustedagedcare.com.au\/newsite\/2018\/09\/27\/a-chat-with-the-family\/","title":{"rendered":"A Chat with the Family"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A great idea for families with aging parents, is to get together for a chat early, instead of waiting until one, or both parents are facing a health or financial crisis.\u00a0 It\u2019s good to know early and while they still have capacity, what they would like to happen.<\/p>\n<p>Although many don\u2019t like to raise the issue, it\u2019s worth asking what your parents\u2019 preferences are in relation to the family home, aged care or home care, while they can still voice them.\u00a0\u00a0 Running \u2018what if\u2019 scenarios can force someone to take stock and have a think about issues they might not otherwise have thought about.<\/p>\n<p>For many, it\u2019s a tricky subject to tackle and certainly, the whole family can feel quite emotional about.\u00a0 But, being prepared to care for your parents as they age can make it a lot less stressful when there\u2019s a change in circumstances, especially as these tend to happen quite quickly.\u00a0 A heath situation can change overnight, quite literally, if they were to have a stroke or a fall or lose capacity.<\/p>\n<p>Facing old age and our own mortality are tough for any of us, and aging is not for the faint-hearted, so there may be resistance from parents or siblings, to confronting issues head on in a formal style of meeting. \u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s well worth reminding your family that it\u2019s in everyone\u2019s best interests to get ready, both emotionally and practically and do what\u2019s best for Mum and Dad, even though you hope it\u2019s a long way off, or may not be needed.\u00a0 And if your family aren\u2019t the \u2018sit down\u2019 types, how would everyone feel most comfortable discussing the issues?<\/p>\n<p>Some have learned that a box of tissues and lot of patience is needed, as talks can be a hotbed of emotions.\u00a0 And family always seem to know how to best push our buttons!\u00a0 Above all, be ready to listen to what family members have to say.\u00a0 Going in to a meeting with an intention to listen, be open minded and relaxed, with your parents\u2019 best interests at heart, can be a great start.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A great idea for families with aging parents, is to get together for a chat early, instead of waiting until one, or both parents are facing a health or financial crisis.\u00a0 It\u2019s good to know early and while they still have capacity, what they would like to happen.
